Self-inflating pad care has three separate jobs: recover the foam, check air retention and prepare dry long-term storage. A single instruction to “leave it open overnight” does not establish all three.
Make a care card for the exact mat
Copy the following from the manufacturer instructions and keep it with the travel sack:
| Field | Why you need it |
|---|---|
| Model, size and valve generation | Repair and valve instructions can differ within a family |
| First-use or post-storage expansion procedure | Slow recovery is not automatically an air leak |
| Approved final inflation method | Foam expansion may not produce final sleeping firmness |
| Washing method and valve position | Prevents transferring another brand’s cleaning rule |
| Long-term shape and valve position | Travel packing and storage can be different |
| Compatible repair kit and cure requirements | Determines whether repair is feasible before departure |
This is a documentation worksheet, not a maintenance interval imposed on every brand.
Separate the two pre-trip checks
First follow the maker’s foam recovery procedure. Then set the pad to its allowed working inflation and check whether it retains support at a steady temperature. Record the two results separately. A pad can expand slowly but hold air; another can expand normally and still leak.
If the pad repeatedly loses support, use the valve/body fault record . If it has bulging, separation or a persistent unexplained odor, document the condition for the manufacturer rather than forcing air or cleaning liquid into the interior.
A verified storage distinction
Therm-a-Rest’s instructions specify dry, unrolled, fully inflated storage with an open valve for its self-inflating pads. Its NeoAir instructions specify a different rolled arrangement. That is a brand-and-construction distinction, not permission to store every sleeping pad by one rule.
Similarly, the maker’s cleaning instructions require the valve closed while washing and prohibit machine washing. Use the actual instructions for another mat rather than assuming cleaner or solvent compatibility.
Plan the space before buying
Draw the expanded storage rectangle and identify a dry location that can hold it without heavy objects on top. Then identify a separate place to clean and dry both surfaces after a trip. A travel sack fitting in a cupboard does not prove the mat’s prescribed long-term configuration fits there.
If suitable storage is unavailable, compare another exact product’s documented storage requirements. Do not assume all air pads, all foam or every thinner mattress solve the problem.
A useful service record
Keep the date, storage conditions, recovery method, air-retention result and photographs of any damage. Add the repair-kit name and cure conditions after a repair. This helps distinguish repeat damage from a repair that never held.
The card and two-stage check are our organization method, informed by the sources above and Therm-a-Rest’s repair guidance . They do not establish an unseen interior is dry. If water entered the pad or its condition remains uncertain, obtain maker-specific advice before storage or reliance on a remote trip.
