A car-camping mattress can mean a bed in a tent beside the vehicle or a bed inside the vehicle. This page addresses the second job. For a tent bed, use the tent and mattress sizing worksheet .

Measure three vehicle configurations

Do not order from the maximum cargo-volume figure. Measure the actual surfaces with the vehicle parked safely and the owner’s manual to hand.

Configuration Record Why it matters
Driving Normal seat positions and secured gear locations Bedding cannot compromise occupants, restraints or controls
Sleeping Closed-hatch length, narrowest occupied width and platform height A bed must fit without loading trim or glass
Leaving the bed Access to door handles and releases A rectangle that fits may still trap the intended exit route

Wheel-well width is only one cross-section. Measure where the sleeper’s shoulders and knees will be and where the mattress will sit vertically. Folded seats, latch hardware and unsupported gaps are structural issues, not problems to bury under a thicker airbed.

An explicit headroom example

Suppose the interior is 38 inches high at the planned sitting position. A 7-inch platform and 4-inch mattress leave 27 inches above the unloaded mattress: 38 − 7 − 4. Replacing it with a 2-inch pad gains 2 inches, but does not prove the sleeper can sit up or exit.

Make a second calculation for the driving load: packed mattress plus platform plus bedding plus the gear displaced by the bed. A mattress that stays in place overnight may still need somewhere to go when rear seats are used the next day. Measure the hatch opening too; an assembled platform can be larger than the opening it must pass through.

These are geometric examples, not vehicle conversion instructions. Do not modify seating, structural mounts, airbags or restraints from a mattress guide. Have any platform designed and secured for the vehicle and load.

Choose the construction after the envelope

Compare the exact mattress’s inflated dimensions, packed dimensions, approved base and inflation method. Foam avoids a valve but needs storage volume; air and self-inflating designs need appropriate repair and drying plans. A mains-powered bed needs a compatible power source, not merely a USB socket. The pump comparison separates these categories.

Do not run an engine or fuel-burning stove or heater to compensate for an inadequate sleeping setup. Follow vehicle and equipment instructions and choose an appropriate place to park. If the cabin cannot provide the required fit and usable exits, use a suitable tent or other sleeping arrangement.

Prove the packing routine before departure

With the vehicle stationary, try the complete transition from driving to sleeping and back. Record what has to leave the vehicle, where wet shoes and equipment go, whether both sleepers can exit and whether all driving positions can be restored. Include time to dry the mattress after use; a sealed bag in the car is not a drying area.

This is our measurement worksheet. Product examples can be checked against HEST’s fit guide , while Therm-a-Rest’s storage instructions and leak/heat guidance explain why storage and heat exposure need their own plan. Neither establishes compatibility with a particular car.
